Finding Hope in Every Page – Shelter for a Butterfly

At Martin House, we are always touched by the incredible support we receive from our community. One such act of kindness has come from Sue, a retired sales director turned children’s author, who has used her talents to bring light to our hospice through a beautifully illustrated children’s book titled Shelter for a Butterfly.

Sue, who lives in West Yorkshire, spent most of her career in sales but after retiring, she decided to follow a lifelong dream of writing and illustrating children’s books. With a vivid imagination and a compassionate heart, Sue’s journey led her to Martin House. Her connection with Martin House began when Sue and her partner Tony were first introduced to our work at the Glitter Ball last year. They were deeply moved by the dedication of our staff and the impact of our care. Wanting to make a meaningful difference, Sue was inspired to create a book that could continue supporting Martin House for years to come.

The story behind Shelter for a Butterfly

Sue’s book, Shelter for a Butterfly, is more than just a children’s story. It’s a heartfelt metaphor representing the journey of the children and families we support. In the story, the butterfly symbolizes the children, and the struggle against the wind reflects the challenges they face. Finally, they find comfort under the magnolia tree, a symbol of Martin House, offering shelter, hope, and love. Sue’s commitment goes beyond words. She personally funded the costs of publishing the book, ensuring that all proceeds directly benefit Martin House.

How can you support?

By purchasing Shelter for a Butterfly, you are not just buying a beautiful storybook – you are supporting the children and families at Martin House. The book is available for purchase in several of our charity shops and online through our eBay store here.

We are so grateful to Sue for her generosity, creativity, and compassion which will help us continue to be here when families when they need us the most.
