Supporting Bereaved Fathers: Navigating Father’s Day After Child Loss

Martin House partners Linley & Simpson aren’t afraid of a challenge when it comes to fundraising for their favourite cause.
From tackling the Yorkshire Three Peaks to competing in the Martin House Dragon Boat Race, staff at the estate agency firm have taken on a wide variety of physical feats, which has led it to raise more than £220,000 for the hospice.
But this summer, the Linley & Simpson team took on their biggest single challenge yet – the Relay 300, an epic, six-day event which saw staff walking, running or cycling 300 miles in relay between their Yorkshire branches in a bid to raise £25,000.
Helen Carter, senior branch manager at Linley & Simpson, who organised the event along with colleagues Kerry Ferguson, Kelly Boot and Salena West, said: “We were looking for a challenge that would be inclusive to the whole of our Yorkshire team, no matter what ability or geography, so that everyone felt a part of it, and could raise money for it too.
“We realised that we had 25 branches in Yorkshire, and that tied in with the idea of raising £25,000 in 2025.”
More than 60 staff took part in the challenge, which also saw branches doing fundraisers along the way. The relay made its final stop at Martin House, where the Linley & Simpson team were surprised by staff, children and families playing music and cheering them in.
Helen said: “It’s always very moving when you go to Martin House, and see the work they do and the difference they make to families.
“It’s an incredibly inspiring place to visit. Everyone there works so hard, it definitely makes us what to help in any way we can.”
From a business perspective, Helen said one of the best parts of the challenge was: “Seeing how involved everyone became in wanting to raise as much as we could, and also seeing staff who had never met before coming together and embrace each other for this one cause.
“Getting to know each other better created an amazing team spirit.”
While the challenge was tough, both in planning the logistics and in some long days for the teams taking part, belief in the cause kept them motivated.
Helen said: “We were so invested in this challenge, and had dreamt about how it was going to look for so long, that when it came to start, we were so excited.
“Seeing how the money is used and the difference it makes to families kept us going.”
The Relay 300 challenge has so far raised over £14,500. To help Linley & Simpson reach the £25,000 target, please visit Relay 300 for Martin House Children’s Hospice – JustGiving.
