Morrisons Foundation funds specialist bath for us

Young people with life-limiting conditions will be able to relax in a state-of-the-art bath when they stay at the hospice thanks to a donation from the Morrisons Foundation.

The foundation has awarded an £11,400 grant to us to buy a new specially adapted bath, as part of a programme to upgrade the hospice’s bathing facilities in our teenage and young adult unit Whitby Lodge.

The new, height-adjustable bath will have hydro-massagers to help with pain relief, can play music and has underwater, colour-changing lights, to provide a multi-sensory experience to young people with serious, life-limiting conditions.

Vicki Greensmith Director of Clinical Services, said: ‘At home, young people are more likely to have adapted showers because they take up less room and are quicker to use, so having this kind of facility available when they come to Martin House is a real treat.

‘We are so grateful to the Morrisons Foundation for its support in helping us to provide this kind of experience, which is part of what making a stay at Martin House so special to young people with serious and complex conditions.’

The grant is part of a programme to replace and upgrade the bathroom facilities at Whitby Lodge, and it is expected around 60 young people will benefit from the new bath each year during their stays at the hospice.

David Scott trustee for the Morrisons Foundation, said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to be supporting Martin House, a highly-respected charity who provide expert care to seriously ill babies, children and young people in Yorkshire.

‘The support, nurture and attention to detail they provide has never been more needed and we are particularly proud to be able to help the charity secure a specialised bath to support with patient pain relief.’
