Making THE BUILD a reality

Our £21.9 million project, THE BUILD, will enable Martin House to continue to support children, young people, and their families for many years to come. The transformation plans are as family-focused as our care. They’ve been created in collaboration with the families that use the hospice, including the children themselves, to ensure their needs are front and centre of the project.

Phase one’s children’s wing will include nine woodland-themed bedrooms with piped oxygen, integrated hoists, and access to the private garden. The space has been designed to balance a “home from home” feel, with the required clinical facilities blended into walls and ceilings. The rooms will be larger to not only accommodate medical equipment but to offer a comfortable space for families to stay together.  Communal spaces like the art room, playroom, family lounge and dining area allow for truly holistic care. And a cooled bedroom where children are cared for after death, will allow families the time and space to say goodbye.

Construction has started

If you’ve visited Martin House recently, it’s hard to miss the supporting steel frames of the children’s wing. Over the last few months, the foundations have been laid, the beams have been installed and the block work is under way. Brick by brick, the children’s bedrooms are taking shape as the external walls begin to reveal the first glimpse of the new bedrooms overlooking the hospice gardens.

Meldrum Construction are the company behind the progress. They are part of the Considerate Contractor Scheme and the team’s approach to supporting Martin House maintain a ‘live site’ has enabled us to provide care 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

The children’s wing will ensure that whether a family is visiting for respite or end-of-life care, support is delivered in the best environment with all the facilities required to meet their often-complex needs.
