Our care team

Our highly specialist care team look after children with a vast range of complex medical needs and we offer support to the whole family. Families and children can be reassured that we offer a wide range of specialised and experienced staff, who can look after the children and young people staying at the hospice and, where appropriate, at home.

We currently offer planned respite care, symptom control, nursing and practical care, community support, end of life care, and bereavement support.

Our care team, comprising 100 staff, is led by the Director of Care who is supported by two Deputy Directors of Care and six care team leaders.

The hospice has its own team of doctors who are available during the day and operate an on-call system to ensure 24 hour cover. Martin House also has two Paediatric Palliative Care Consultants.  These are senior children’s doctors who specialise in alleviating the symptoms, but not curing the condition.

There are always nurses on each shift, along with other team members with varied skills and expertise, who can ensure that all needs of the child or young person can be met. The team has the experience and the skills to look after children with a range of needs, including those with complex care needs.

We have music therapists and artists in residence on our care team.  Martin House has a chaplain and chapel/prayer room in our garden.  We also have a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in house.

We acknowledge and respect parents' expertise as the main carers of their ill child. We recognise the importance of listening to our children and young people, and their families, and help them to make well informed choices about care, treatment and end of life issues.
