Make Every Christmas Count

This year has taught us all how fragile life is – something that is felt each day in the lives of families who care for children with life-limiting conditions, like Felix.

Christmas is often a magical time at Martin House but this year, it will be different. That’s why, after such a challenging few months, when families need our support more than ever, we want to ask if you will help us be there for them this Christmas.

As well as being a special milestone for the children we support, Christmas can also be a worrying time for their parents - especially if they need to access urgent medical care from Christmas Eve through to Boxing Day.
For Felix’s parents, Sarah and Matt, knowing Martin House is there to support them over Christmas is invaluable. Sarah tells us what our care means for their family this festive season.
“As a baby, my son Felix never reached any of the usual milestones, and it took many months of medical investigations before we were told he has a ‘syndrome without a name’. He has a progressive condition, so Felix is unlikely to live beyond his teenage years. The doctors said we should, “take Felix home and enjoy him.”
“Our lives were turned upside down and it took us some time to come to terms with Felix’s prognosis. Eventually, I did some research online and me and my husband, Matt, reached out to Martin House. It’s the best thing we ever did.

“That’s why Christmas at Martin House is so wonderful. Felix adores seeing Santa and even my girls, who’ve had to grow up so quickly helping care for Felix, get caught up in the magic of it all. Martin House Christmas parties, visits from Nuzzlets farm animals and watching the Martin House nativity have given us so many happy memories to look back on.

“I’ve no idea what will be happening at the hospice this Christmas while Covid-19 is still around. But you can guarantee that the staff will always do their very best for the children.

“It’s also incredibly reassuring to know that if we’re worried about Felix for any reason over Christmas, they will be there for us 24/7. Felix is the happiest person you’d ever meet and he loves every day, but I can’t pretend that there haven’t been some dark times. Thanks to Martin House, we’ve never had to go through them alone.”
