Morley music festival fundraiser

16 August 2017
Redrow Homes is sponsoring a music festival in Morley, West Yorkshire, which aims to put Martin House centre stage.

The builder has stumped up £700 to Morley Cricket and Sports Club, which is hoping to raise much-needed funds for itself and Martin House with the August event.

It is the fifth innings for Wicketfest which, according to club committee member Jeremy Hudson, gets bigger and better each year.

He said: “We are anticipating between 1,000 to 1,500 people coming this year, so we’re confident it will be a really successful event.

“For the first time we have got food stalls as well as the crafts stalls and children’s rides and, of course, the music. It gets bigger each year so with this, our fifth Wicketfest, we are hoping for a great year.”

He added: “The sponsorship from Redrow has paid for the large mobile stage on which the local bands will perform and funding the stage ourselves would immediately take a lot of money away from the total raised, so we are delighted and very grateful.”

The cricket club was established in 1889 and, with five junior and three senior teams as well as a host of under-nine children playing at the club, it is very much a part of the community.

Jeremy said: “We have had generations of families playing for the club, so it is vital that we keep it going for the area – but it is hard work. But, however difficult, it is rewarding to see the benefit the sport has for those who take part and those who watch.

"And as part of giving back to the community, this year we decided that we wanted to help not just ourselves but the hospice too. For the first time we are charging a nominal entrance fee of £1, all of which will go to Martin House.”

Patsy Aicken, sales director for Redrow Homes (Yorkshire), said: “This is absolutely the kind of event and cause that Redrow likes to get behind and it’s especially appropriate as Martin House is currently our adopted charity. We’ve raised around £50,000 for them over the last two years so to be able to help the cricket club raise even more is fantastic. We’re very much looking forward to seeing and hearing the bands on The Redrow Stage.”

Redrow Homes is building a selection of three and four-bedroom homes at Weavers Chase, off Albert Road, in Morley, and has previously paid to have signage on display at Morley Cricket and Sports Club.

This year’s Wicketfest is being held on Sunday, August 27, starting at 12 noon at the Scatcherd Lane club.
