Role of Friends Groups

The Role Of The Friends Groups

There is no fixed protocol in the formation of a group. All that is needed is a number of people (it doesn’t matter how many) who are able to devote time and effort to organise and promote the many ways of fundraising that are available.

The main function of a Friends Group is to act as a focus in the area for fund-raising activities. This may involve:-

a) Representing Martin House by collecting cheques from, for example, schools, scouts and guides, youth clubs etc.

b) Talking about Martin House to local groups and distributing our literature and posters. Training will be provided.

c) Selling Martin House goods and Christmas cards throughout the year.

d) We attend various shows, galas and supermarkets throughout the county, and it is most rewarding to feel part of the local team at these events. We always welcome new volunteers willing to help us.

e) Being responsible for placing collecting boxes in restaurants, hotels, shops etc. and collecting their contents on a regular basis. Receipt and thank you letters are dealt with by Martin House.

f) Planning a flag day in your town. This needs forward approval from your local authority but can be important in raising funds and awareness.

g) Organising a sponsored event. Encouraging local people, willing to sponsor or display events posters, for events such as:- Cycling/Running/Swimming/Squash Clubs, Young Farmers, Flower Arranging Club, Choral Societies, The Armed Forces, Scouts/Guides and Schools etc.

h) Raising funds through Coffee/Lunch/Tea/Dinner Parties/Bridge/Whist Drives/Barbecues/Disco Dances/Car Boot Sales/Jumble Sales.

i) It will also be of great help if organisers can identify opportunities for Martin House to approach local businesses, Trusts and any other contacts you may have whom you think may be willing to support Martin House.

How Martin House can help you

While the success of Friends Groups will depend on their local initiatives, Martin House will be able to provide support and help in the following ways:-

a) Information - by providing updated statistics, financial information etc. when requested. Please ask us in plenty of time to enable us to supply what you need to fit in with your requirements.

b) Literature and visual aids

c) Organisation of annual meetings at Martin House to share information and experiences and to meet members of staff who will provide support for you.

d) Provision of saleable items such as Christmas cards which make money and promote Martin House.

e) Advice - accounting and banking procedures, giving talks etc. - in fact anything you wish to discuss, just give Martin House a call.

Sadly, the need for Martin House will never disappear. Happily, with your help, we will always be here to meet that need.
