First Bus and Unite the Union Sponsor Dragon Boat Spectacular

17 April 2016
This May, teams from across the region will be competing in the ninth annual Martin House Dragon Boat Race, raising funds for children’s hospice care in North, East and West Yorkshire. This year’s event is once again generously supported by First Bus and Unite the Union.

Martin House Hospice Care for Children and Young People is inviting teams of enthusiastic fundraisers to sign up to the event, which will see crews race thirty-foot Chinese boats over a 200m course on Waterloo Lake at Roundhay Park, Leeds. No previous rowing experience is required and both teams and spectators alike are guaranteed a fantastic day out, whether or not they take home a winning trophy.

Now in its ninth year, the Dragon Boat Race has raised over £200,000 for Martin House, which supports life-limited children and young people across North, East and West Yorkshire. Last year’s event saw 30 teams take part from local businesses and organisations from across the region including event sponsors First and Unite the Union, Leeds Audi, Gusto Cookridge, Mazars and the Martin House Care Team.

The charity are delighted to have partnered once again with Leeds-based First Bus and Unite the Union, who have joined forces in sponsoring the event. Events Manager Caroline Hudson has led on the event since its inception in 2008 and is looking forward to another action-packed event:

“The Dragon Boat Race has become a firm favourite with many of our supporting companies, who return year on year to take part. The day offers a great teambuilding opportunity and there are plenty of activities for spectators so we encourage all crews to bring family and friends along for the action.

“The sponsorship of both First Bus and Unite the Union helps us to maximise the funds raised from the event and we are truly grateful for their continued support. Both are entering teams this year and are sure to give it their all when the oars hit the water this May. We wish them the best of luck as they compete for the winner’s trophy.”

“This year, we are asking each Dragon Boat team member to raise a minimum of £100 and we’ll be offering full support to help them reach their fundraising goal. Every penny really does count if we’re to raise the £15,000 a day we need to provide our services to families across the region. We can’t wait to see you there!”

Bob Dorr, Business Manager for First Leeds said, "Our people and our bus networks connect communities across Leeds and we're proud to once again support this fantastic event with Unite the Union. Our staff really look forward to taking part in this fun day whilst raising money for such an important local charity as Martin House."

Entry is only £350 per team and secures a dragon boat, lifejackets, and an entry in a minimum of three races. Teams can sign up online or contact the events team on 01937 844569 or events@martinhouse.org.uk. Entrance to the festival is free to spectators and First Bus are offering travel for £5 for five people on the day.
