Brighouse Winner for Grand Car Raffle

07 July 2016
Brighouse resident, Mrs Joanna Simpson, has received the keys to a brand new Citroen C1 as the lucky winner of the Martin House Grand Car Raffle. She met this week with ITV Yorkshire Calendar presenter and Martin House Ambassador, Christine Talbot, at the hospice in Boston Spa to collect her prize.

The Car Raffle, which has been raising funds for the hospice since 2011, this year raised over £42,000. The support of confectionery firm HARIBO and car dealership Evans Halshaw Citroen of Whitehall Road, Leeds, ensures that the majority of the proceeds go towards supporting Martin House families.

Mrs Simpson is a long-term supporter of Martin House and a regular buyer of both raffle tickets and Christmas cards. Although she has three children now able to drive, Mrs Simpson has firmly claimed the car for herself: “My husband will be having my old car and my husband’s car will be passed on to the children. My son is ecstatic as he’s home from uni over the summer and will now have a car to get around. When I got the call from Martin House to say I’d won the car, I didn’t believe it. I always read the newsletter and look out for the raffle winner but I never expected to appear myself!”

Director of Fundraising at Martin House, Jodie Shepherd, said: “Congratulations to Mrs Simpson and thank you to everyone who purchased tickets this year. We are delighted with the amount raised, which brings the cumulative total for the past six years to over £220,000. Over the coming years, we are planning to do more to ensure families across West, North and East Yorkshire receive care in a place of their choice, whether this is at our hospice or in their own home. The money raised through this year’s Car Raffle will go towards helping us achieve this and support more families across the region.”

Evans Halshaw Citroen Leeds Dealer Principal, Peter Dean, said: “We have been privileged to have supported the Car Raffle since the inaugural draw in 2011 and are proud to have contributed to the huge amount of money raised for hospice families over the past six years. We look forward to supporting the raffle again as the hospice celebrates its thirtieth anniversary next year.”

Julie Beaman, Assistant Communications Manager for HARIBO said: “HARIBO is delighted to have supported another very successful Car Raffle this year. The Car Raffle is one of many ways that we have supported Martin House over the years and we are proud to play a part in helping the hospice to support children and young people, and their families, across the region.”
